How to make a digital plan for your business

So I left my day Job a few weeks ago ready to set up and help business and brands get online, use the internet and Social Media to benefit their business. Part of this is setting up my new website that will be offering Social Media Training I wanted give you all a taste of what I am building as a thank you for reading.

How to make a digital plan for your business

What is a Digital plan?
A digital plan is the plan for your business online, it should be the combined strategy for your business or Band incorporating Social media and your Website.

It’s important to have a plan before you start trying to market your brand online as if not it’s very easy to get lost in the sea of Social Media and websites. Before taking the first steps online it’s important to understand who your target audience is and where they are?

I will break down each step for you that I do with my clients so you can understand you to make your own plan.

Overview
What is Web 2.0?
A Web 2.0 site may allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where people are limited to the passive viewing of content. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, web applications, mashups and folksonomies.[3]

Web 2.0 changed the way we use the internet: Facebook, Twitter and mobile phones have now changed how your customers interact with your brand. When a customers now wants to buy a product they will google it and read reviews or post on Social media and ask their friends for advice and suggestion. Web 2.0 changed the experience to allow customer instant contact with brands and gives them the ability to make more informed decision. This is a big reason why it’s now very important to have a presence online so your customers can find you.

What are the Digital Channels?

Website
A Website is your home on the internet and for some companies this is there business, It’s important that you have your business online so people can find you. There are many important factors on a websites but the biggest 2 are the following
-          Easy to be found on google
-          Clear way to contact you

Email
Many people say the money is in the list, having a email list of your customers is a very powerful tool in your digital toolkit. With more users now with a smart phone your message goes directly to them where they are. If you then combine both useful information that gives your customers additional value and a sales message or product, this will leave you with a engaged customers that is looking forward to your next email.

Social Media
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google +, LinkedIn and Pinterest are some of the biggest Social Media platforms. They all allow you to communicate in different ways understanding these and where your customers are is key to your plan.

Video
With smartphone and better internet speed getting your message across in a video has never been easier. There are now many different video sharing site as well, all the major social platforms allow you to upload videos or share them.

Audio
Podcasts and audio clips are becoming more common with your customers being able to take your content and listen to it on the go.

What type of media is used?
What is the main type of user on the channel?

So now we understand what the main channels are its now important to understand who your customers and target audience are.

Who are your audience?
When you setup your brand did you have a target audience in mind? Are you selling fashion or maybe baby accessories?

For the full report

From my own observations

Twitter is great for B2B and making connections while driving traffic to blogs and sites.

Facebook is great for B2C and if you have a product to sell to domestic customers is great.
Pinterest – Lots of women use this platform and is a visual platform so if you have products add them here

LinkedIn – This is great for B2B talk business and answer questions and get involved in groups.

So once you know who your audience is then you can then start to plan where to go to engage with them.

Spying on your Competitor

It’s more than likely that there will already be competitors on the Internet and from them we can work out what is working best for them.

We need to pick out 2-3 competitors and answer the following questions for each platform

Twitter
-          How many follower
-          When was the last tweet
-          Do they talk to anyone?

Facebook
-          How many fans
-          When was the last post
-          Do they talk to anyone
 Pinterest
-          How many followers
-          How many boards
-          Do they get many comments?
-          Do they respond
Blogging
-          Do the blog?
-          How often?
-          Do they get many comments?
-          Do they get many shares?
Youtube
-          Do they have a channel?
-          Do they have many videos?
-          When did they upload the last one
-          Do they have many comments?
Email
-          Can you easily sign up to their mailing list?
-          What sort of email do you get back?
-          Was it any good?

You can keep going with different platforms and similar questions. But once you have done this for 2-3 of your competitors then you should also be able to see what is working for them. Social proof is one of the best ways to understand what is working.

Then Score each platform 1-6 in order of results for competitors Eg
Twitter – 5
Facebook – 2
Pinertrest -4
Blogging -3
Youtube – 6
Email – 1

Then simply add each platforms Scores together and this will then show you which platforms are going to be the best for your business. Take the top 3 from them and this is where we will start with making your plan.

Making the plan

We are going to start with the top 3 Channels that are working well for our competition. It’s important that we now set SMART targets as you want to know that the work put in is providing ROI.

What does SMART stand for?
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time Bound

So if we take Twitter as the example Platform:

We set the following

We want to gain 500 followers in 1 month.

Specific - 500 Followers
Measurable – 500 followers is easy to measure
Attainable – Is it actually achievable, yes if correct methods used
Relevant – Is this actually relevant – Yes as it’s important to build a following to increase reach
Time Sensitive – 1 month gives us an amount of time to reach this target.

So you need to set SMART targets for your top 3 platforms.

Then you need to break down those targets and decide how you will achieve them.

So for twitter we need to get 16 new followers a day so how will I achieve that.
I will Follow 30 People Each Day
I will do 5 Tweets and 10 RTs
I will do 2 #Hashtag networking events

Once you have all 3 of your platforms all you need to do is to go and do it.

Keeping track of your Targets

Once you have set your SMART targets then it’s important that you check on them, If you have set a 4 week target then check each week on how you are doing, have you achieved 25% of your target? If that great, If not then you need to ask some of the following questions

What worked?
What didn't work?
What else can I try?

Keep repeating this process every week and you will hit your target.

This is example and of one of the module I am developing to help people understand and use Social Media along with a 60 day course that will break it down into easy chunks.

Has this helped you gain a better understanding on how to plan? If so leave me a comment and share it with other that might benefit

A few little tips for getting the most from facebook

If it seems like everyone on the face of the earth has a Facebook account, it’s because that’s very close to being the reality. And while the numbers don't exactly mesh and match up completely – Facebook has just south of 1 billion user accounts and the closest estimate to the worldwide population right now is 7 billion people – it’s not that far off.

Just putting your marketing messages in front of this amount of people is probably enough to create small fortunes for many small businesses and savvy marketers, but the odds are fantastic that you’re not looking for just a small fortune. If you really want to unlock the true treasures that Facebook allows masterful marketers who implement creative strategies and tactics – tactics like the ones shared below – you’re going to really start to see why so many people are over the moon with all of the leverage that Facebook makes possible.

Publish content that is viral in nature

Much easier said than done, I know, but once you're able to shift your mindset from just a pure production standpoint – putting out content and hoping that the marketplace enjoys it or embraces it with very little concern to what happens after you've hit the share button – you'll be able to transform your marketing impact almost immediately.

If you do a close study of all the information that gets shared rapidly by literally millions and millions of Facebook users you’ll start to see some patterns crop up. One, almost all of the content fits in just a single status update or has one picture with information in it. Bite-size contact wins out over gigantic reams of information on Facebook, strictly because many people will be just scanning through their newsfeed and you have to contend with ridiculously short attention spans.

That brings us to the second component, making things sticky. You're not going to be able to engage with the Facebook marketplace unless your content is a little bit out there, controversial, or shocking – in a word, sticky. You want them to really remember exactly what you're sharing, but more than that you want them to push it onto someone else who will also have an emotional reaction and move it further down the line. This is how things go viral, and one of the most critical components of mastering social media marketing, especially on Facebook.

Understand that this is a social platform first and foremost

While there are amazing opportunities for business owners who use Facebook effectively, you have to remember that the overwhelming majority of Facebook users – all 1 billion of them – are jumping onto Facebook to find out information about their friends, family, and even complete and total strangers. They're not looking forward to ably pitchfest or advertising that is going to bombard them and beat them over the head in an effort to sell them things.

The more you can disguise your pitches as valuable content the more effective your marketing on Facebook will be.

Are you using Facebook as a lead generation tool?

While the feeding frenzy that was the social media marketing craze is starting to ebb a little bit right now, the fact of the matter is that smart and savvy business owners can tap directly into the leverage that Facebook offers to create truly stunning results and profits.

Hands down the most popular social media network on the face of the planet – with just under 1 billion unique user accounts and counting right now – you will have access not only to the sheer volume of people who use Facebook each and every single day, but also an almost endless amount of targeted marketing data that you can tap into in an effort to really fine tune your marketing messages and boost conversion rates in the process.

Here are a handful of essentials to make sure that you are using Facebook to the rest of your abilities.

Create a detailed customer avatar before you even begin ad placement on the Facebook platform

Maybe one of the biggest separators between effective marketers and also-rans, creating a detailed customer avatar can boost your marketing effectiveness through the roof.

Essentially a breakdown of all of the different criteria that your ideal customer embodies – the person who will most likely lead that the chance to take you up on all of your marketing efforts and advertisements with very little persuasion necessary – your customer avatar will help you pick exactly which details you should be focusing on when you’re targeting your Facebook ads. Because of their unique ability to collect almost endless amounts of data and information – and make that insider information available to you when you decide to advertise on their platform – this is really the keys to the castle of making Facebook marketing work for you.

Create multi step marketing campaigns with Facebook as the lead generator

This is the other real essential tactic and strategy that you can and should employ when trying to boost your business through Facebook. While there is certainly no shortage of businesses that are enjoying incredible results with one time offers or direct sale messages through the Facebook advertising marketplace, you’ll be able to enjoy a ridiculously higher conversion rate – as well as more flexibility to influence and persuade your new prospects – if you are able to push them deeper into your sales funnel.

This means that you should look to use Facebook as a lead generation tool, a means to get them into your other web properties or marketing messages in an effort to turn them into hotter and hotter prospects and eventually paying customers.

This multi-step approach is one of the oldest ways of making the most out of each and every marketing vehicle a smart and savvy business owner like yourself could use, and it doesn’t have the same kind of churn and burn aspects that a one-off sale or direct pitch has. You’ll be able to cultivate a real relationship, create serious affinity, and establish total expert status if you use Facebook as a lead generation tool rather than a direct marketing vehicle.

Facebook - Almost 1 billion users!

Hands-down the true Titan of social media, Facebook has dominated our lives in ways that many of us
don’t truly understand or appreciate. One of the most visited websites in the entirety of the Internet
– easily in the top five of a list of sites that numbers in the billions – Facebook has become just as
ubiquitous as Google.

This is critically important to understand when you’re trying to use Facebook for business, as you’ll really be able to unlock all of the leverage made possible by this online platform if you understand how people use it, why people use it, and how many people are truly using. Here are some of the insider information and stats that you can use to boost your business dramatically.

Close to 1 billion people are registered Facebook users

Let that sink in for a moment.

Just going off of one of the latest worldwide population estimates – putting the number right around 7 billion people or so – this means that one in every seven human beings on the face of the earth is a Facebook user. There is no other tool or technology that has this kind of pervasive reach, and each and every time one of those human beings creates a Facebook account data is being mined from all of their interactions and information – creating a detailed profile that is added to the rest of Facebook’s almost endless marketing information.
And while the number of people who use Facebook is truly staggering, it’s almost just as incredible that each and every single month Facebook users spend 700 billion minutes logged into and interacting with the site in some way, shape, or form. 70 languages are natively supported by Facebook, 75% of Facebook users live outside the United States, and almost 350,000,000 people access Facebook through their mobile device each and every single day. These are the kind of numbers you need to base your business off of.
Facebook enjoys a tremendous user interaction percentage

Almost unique to its social media platform and unlike any other, Facebook users log into the platform at an almost 50% rate each and every single day – with 48% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 logging into it the moment that they wake up. Even more stunning is that 28% of that same age group checks Facebook on their phones before they even roll out of bed – giving you the opportunity to market to them before they are bombarded with other media and messages they will be slammed with throughout the day.
But the real gem of Facebook marketing would have to be the simple fact that each and every single Facebook user is linked to (on average) at least 130 friends and 80 unique pages, allowing them you to have incredible reach just by publishing your ads in a handful of strategic ways. This can push your marketing strategies to new heights just because of the interconnected way that Facebook is constructed, really tapping into the power of word of mouth marketing – without any of them understanding that there contributing to your business success.

The Secrets of Social Media - I shouldn't be sharing this

So what are the Social Media Secrets?

Want to know how to get 1 million Facebook fans?
How to make a Video go Viral?

If your looking for a Guru or expert then I'm sorry I have no 30 day method to make you a 6 figure passive income, I'm just a Yeti talking about Social Media

So are these actually the Secrets? I think they are more common sense but it sometimes take writing them down to point them out.

  • Not every platform will work for you
  • It might not work straight away
  • If your not online all the time then your doing it wrong
  • Its all about the numbers of followers
  • Its going to require you to Engage with people
Not every platform will work for you
They are currently Hundreds of Social networks but its true that they might not actually work for your brand. Each platform allows you to communicate with your customers in a different way, Twitter will give you  140 characters, YouTube allows you yo upload a video that can be a 30 second clip or a much longer tutorial or product review.

Its very important to set goals and aims when using Social media so you can measure ROI. Make sure that you can report on its effectively I would suggest Google Analytic as you  then see and understand if you work is actually having a impact for your brand.

If you think a platform is not working for you ask the following questions
  • Am I just selling?
  • Have I engaged with the users?
  • Are they actually my target audience?
If you are just sending out sales messages your going to make your users switch off, no one wants to be sold at all the time.If this is what your Social media Feed looks like STOP posts something interesting you will be amazed at the difference, giving you customers some information about your industry how ever boring you think it is you are then adding value to and offering more reason to follow you.

It might not work straight away

"Perseverance is a great element of success. If you knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody."
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It can take time to really get to understand something new as they say "Rome wasn't build in a day" .Take your time as you start to use a platform a new platform and understand your customers. The best advice is to keep trying and keep knocking at the gate. Change what you are posting, try posting a video try posting a picture, or sharing industry related information or even a lol cat.

Set your self time based goals for example you want to get to 100 followers in 30 days and then break that down into smaller goals 33 followers in 10 days and so on. The important thing is try different methods and engage with your customers keep trying and you will find what works for you and your customers.

If your not online all the time then your doing it wrong
You can't be online all then time the world is going on around us and with smart phones, tablets and laptops it's made the internet so much easy to access. But you don't need to be online all the time, Set aside an hour a day for Social Media then break that down into six 10 minutes chunks. You know what platforms you use so split your time between them. Also by splitting your time into small chunks you are not always on during same time of the day so this allows you to engage with different users.

Its all about the number of followers

I think this is the biggest Social Media lie, having thousands of followers means that you will get sales and make money. It wont mean anything people offer to sell you 10,000 Facebook likes or 10,000 twitter followers but they have no value as they are all fake and are bots. I would be happy with 1 follower that I engaged with. This is the same for every business you could have thousands of people come to your business and look at your goods but unless they buy then its a waste of your efforts to get them there. This really covers so many aspects of the Internet:
  • Traffic to your site is useless unless its targeted
  • Follower numbers don't matter if they are fake
  • Number of email subscribers you have unless they signed up
Don't buy traffic or followers just build real traffic and fans 1 real fan will do what 10,000 robots can't and that is tell other real people.

Its going to require you to Engage with people
This should be no secret here ENGAGE with people, be real and not just a brand. I may talk about Social media primarily but if you watch me I also talk about my kids and whats going on in my life. I use my own life to reach out to others I have kids so I can talk to others with kids, if you like sport then do the same.

So if you don't know how to engage follow these simple rules:

  • If someone comments write back
  • If they share your post thank them even share one of theirs
  • If you see something that interests you then share or comment on it
  • Don't just sell
  • Ask am I adding value to my customers with what I am offering online

So what are your Social Media Secrets?
Sam
The Social Yeti

What are the different Social Networks?

An Explanation of the different Social Networks

So there are many different Social Networks now but I would like to cover some of the major ones and what audiences you can reach with them.

Facebook

Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook, Inc.[4] As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users,[5] more than half of whom use Facebook on a mobile device.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook

So Facebook is already 9 years old and has over 1 billion active users, Facebook is where lots of people from all around the world come to socialise, share their pictures and stories of their lives. Facebook contains in my view the largest use of domestic user and its not open like Twitter so this is where Mums talk about their kids and were people are real. Having a presence on Facebook is very important for your business they will look for your brand and engage with you.

Twitter

Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets".
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and by July, the social networking site was launched. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 500 million registered users as of 2012, generating over 340 million tweets daily and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.

So not as old as Facebook and it’s a very public platform witter can be hard to get your message across as you are only Given 140 characters to do it. I love twitter and great thing I find is that the people behind the tweets are normally the company owners themselves. If time is taken to nurture relationship and not just send out constant sales messages then it can be one of the best platforms.

Youtube

YouTube is a video-sharing website, created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005, on which users can upload, view and share videos.[4] The company is based in San Bruno, California, and uses Adobe Flash Video and HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos.

You tube was the first and biggest video sharing site there have been many viral videos and trends from YouTube including Gangnam Style and the Harlem Shake along with hours our cats. Its important for your business to have video on youtube as its gives another platform to engage with your users and people love to see whats in the box so doing videos are of unboxing are great as it shows off your product and lets the customer see what they are getting.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo-sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests and hobbies. Users can browse other pinboards for images, 're-pin' images to their own pinboards, or 'like' photos.

Only 3 years old but has grown steadily during that time if you have a product then it’s a great platform to share your images there. With the growth of smart phones I still think that there will be growth in this platform as people are sharing more on social networks and photos are a great media for sharing. Combined with the rise in infographics more companies are now looking at this Pinterest to engage with their customers and look at cupcakes.

Google +

Google+ (pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus, sometimes abbreviated as G+) is a multilingual social networking and identity service[3][4] owned and operated by Google Inc. It was launched on June 28, 2011.[5] As of December 2012, it has a total of 500 million registered users of whom 235 million are active in a given month.[1] Unlike other conventional social networks which are generally accessed through a single website, Google has described Google+ as a "social layer" consisting of not just a single site, but rather an overarching "layer" which covers many of its online properties.[6]    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GooglePlus
Did you know that GooglePlus has overtaken Twitter in in number of users?  Combine that with the ease to share video, image and text its becoming more popular. Some of the great features include Google Hangouts which allows up to 10 users to talk together via video. With Social signals becoming more important making sure you have GooglePlus for your site and content is becoming very important part of SEO strategy and social proof.

Which Social networks do you use?
